Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is a concept that is still in its infancy, but companies like Uber have proven there is clear public demand for MaaS solutions in urban areas, providing 18.7 million trips per day. The development of automation and electrification of cars as well as the development of Mobile Edge Computing has the potential to transform personal vehicle ownership to MaaS. Widespread adoption of MaaS has interesting positive implications for the accessibility, sustainability and safety of urban populations which are predicted to grow by 13% in the next 30 years.
The flexibility, convenience, and financial benefits offered by MaaS are expected to drive people from owning their own cars. We could instead see a widespread shift towards shared ownership subscriptions or pay as you go models as the natural evolution of personal mobility.
